I have a feeling that we don’t ask enough open questions when communicating with potential clients.
The sort of questions that stimulate conversation and improve understanding between two parties.
Questions asked in an email or letter might come across as interrogation and probably won’t get answered.
However, questions asked via the human touch are much more likely to be positively received and engaged with.
Questions like:
“I’m interested in hearing about:
- Your projects coming up and whether we can help you deliver them?
- Your contract renewal and whether we can discuss ideas with you close to the renewal date?
- Whether you feel you are making the most of your……. and if we can help you make improvements?”
It’s just my hunch.
Asking questions demonstrates our willingness to show an interest in others and their circumstances.
An immediate response might be no. The future outcome though, might be very different, if the door is open for us to stay in touch.
“Asking a question is the simplest way of focusing thinking…asking the right question may be the most important part of thinking.” – Edward de Bono.
